Basically in that case, OP became someone else’s vassal after being subjugated in a war, then their master declared war on someone and OP auto-joined that war. The reason I said the system is broken in some ways despite me not agreeing with this specific thing, is because earlier today I saw a post about a similar, but subtly different situation. You should officially withdraw from one of the treaties so you make it crystal clear which side you’re on. No matter what choice you make, you’re a traitor. You promised to protect someone and you promised not to attack someone else. USA shouldn’t have promised to protect X despite knowing how strongly anti-western it is, or it should have officially left NATO. If it doesn’t officially leave NATO, and promises to protect X, and then the two go to war, the USA will think its unreliable no matter what choice it makes. Let’s say it promised some random, anti-western country “X” protection. Let’s say today, USA promised some random country protection. Let’s ignore the Total War mechanics for now. You can easily check how much they hate each other and how close they are to war.

You knowingly had pacts with two different factions. OP, I think there are flaws with the vassal management system. Because as-is you simply can't have vassals, since they inevitably lead to a cycle of infinitely bad trustworthiness (which i turn makes your vassals revolt becuase you defended them.) Either your overlord obligation overrides the NAP and trade agreement, or vice-versa. There really needs to be some kind of priority system here. Either case my painstakingly built up trustworthiness (after the LAST TIME this shitshow happened) is back down to -60 or so.ĮDIT: Another option would be to break down the generic "trustworthiness" score into a couple of different things ("Breaks NAP's", "Is an irresponsible overlord", etc.) If you leave your border with them undefended and open for 20 turns, there's a pretty good chance that they're going to attack you regardless of what treaties are in place, because to the AI you look like a weak faction. If I refuse the call I get penalty for breaking my vassalage. You could have a vassal or ally that is your best friend, but they are ultimately a fellow warlord who has their own goals and ambitions to follow. If I join my vassal I get penalty for breaking our NAP and trade agreement. Said guy declares war on Kong Rong's successor. We have a non aggression pact, trade agreement, etc. Some guy who I think is Gong Du's successor is ruling the west, we are fairly good buddies after smashing Lu Bu together. Case in point: I vassalize Kong Rong's faction (it's not actually lead by Kong Rong but my some woman because Kong Rong had an accident involving Yuan Shao, but that's not important right now)
